Photographic artist Chris Jordan latest work, Gyre. Look familiar?

The 8′ x 11′ triptych is based on the famous Japanese painting, “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” by Hokusai.

Instead of paint, the colors are composed of 2.4 million pieces of plastic - the estimated number of pounds of plastic that enter the world’s ocean’s every hour!

Gyre is the first image in a mini-series that Jordan is creating about the Pacific Garbage Patch, and is named after the Pacific Gyre, a thousand miles wide ocean current which turns clockwise like a giant slow-motion whirlpool and concentrates tons of the world’s trash.

Have one less piece of plastic in your home. Rigid plastic-like potty, but made from a special rice husk material that completely biodegrades when the potty is disposed of. Is hard wearing, hygienic and long lasting as a plastic potty.

“Think potties are probably thrown away quite a lot as no-one would really want their child to have a pre-used one!!”

When I was a kid I lived in a little seaside village in Norfolk. One of my stand out memories is collecting Sea Glass (ground down glass pieces) with my mum. She would convert them in to pictures and all sorts.

I thought I would have look for some with my kids. I could find a single piece. Nothing but plastic every

where. Seems sad. The plastic will never go. The glas eventually just grinds down in to sand.

Bottled water has to be one of the biggest money making schemes ever! Work out what you use a day, a week, a year. You’ll be shocked. Only the bottle can be re-cycled (if they do) that’s a lot of lids that will last forever. Blacks water bottle is £6.99. This water bottle will have paid for itself in just 2 weeks. Then it’s FREE! Also \”last year 16 million gallons of oil were consumed to make plastic water bottles.\”

The water itself is certainly no better for you. Let’s face it - for the most part, water is water. H2O, no matter what type of fancy bottle you put it in or engage movie stars and models to extol it’s virtues. A report from the United Nations came to the conclusion that bottled water has no nutritional benefits over tap water in most countries.

For the most part, this bottled water is just filtered or distilled tap water.

If you must - buy a filter

It was just over a month ago we started PNF so I thought it would be an idea to let you all know what people are doing to help clean & REDUCE plastic in that time, showing that just a few changes when put together, can make a MASSIVE difference (and save money).

By popular demand we are giving you a few easy tips on how to avoid plastic in the first place. Next time there will be more tips & more examples of what people are doing to give you motivation. 1. Shower gel = Soap – tons cheaper as well
2. Hand wash = Soap, again tons cheaper
3. Bagged fruit & veg = Choosing loose fruit & veg
4. Putting loose fruit & veg in a plastic bag = Put it in the trolley loose
5. Squeezy Mayo, tomato sauces, HP, etc = Go with the old fashioned glass ones. They look better too!
6. Juice with a plastic screw top or pull thing = Go to the cheap aisle & cut it open
7. Carrier bag = Take your own bags or your ‘Groovy Granny Trolley’
8. Bottled water = A aluminum one from a camping shop
9. ‘Normal’ shampoo = Shampoo bar from Lush or somewhere similar
